How to Properly and Easily Do Your Laundry
A Student's Guide

When I first got into college, I had no idea how to do my own laundry, because I was never made to do it at home. I lived at home for the first two years of college and so I never had to worry about it. Well, two years into my education I decided to head to a different school and so I had to move away from home. This meant that I had to do everything on my own and the things that I did not know how to do were things that I had to figure out quickly. Laundry is not something you can wing or guess at because you do not want to mess up your own clothing and have nothing to wear to school. I was always confused by what goes wear until I asked someone who I lived with and he explained it to me so that I always know where to put my clothing and what exactly I was expected to do in order to getting the clothes clean. Here is a simple explanation, which you should find very helpful:

1) Before you step into the laundry mat you will want to have your clothing organized because it makes it easier to place into the machine when the time comes. You should separate into light and dark colors and not worry about the tones of dark. For example, you can but blue and black together in a pile without a problem just as you can put red. You will need to put the whites by themselves in a pile though.

2) Once you put the clothing in the machine you will want to add half a cap full of soap to the load and start the machine.

3) You will need to put the colors in cold water and put your whites in warm water. Many people confuse this but it is easy to remember because white starts with the letter W and colors start with the letter C. Make sure you select the right one because you could shrink your clothing if not.

4) Once they are done you can put them in the drier but you should put them on medium heat because if it gets too hot it may burn the design off of your shirt. Also, if you have something made of thin delicate fabric then do not put it in here and you can hand dry it.
